🌿 Key research findings

  1. Evidence varies considerably between herbs.
Some botanicals have been studied extensively, while others have little high-quality human evidence. Importantly, a supplement sold commercially may not be identical to the preparation used in a clinical study.
  2. “Natural” does not automatically mean safe.
Herbal products can have pharmacological effects, side effects and toxicities. Quality and contamination are also ongoing concerns.
  3. Herb–drug interactions remain one of the biggest research concerns.
Current evidence confirms that some herbs can alter the effects of medicines. St. John’s wort is a particularly well-established example, while interactions involving many other herbs remain uncertain because good clinical studies are limited.
  4. Research quality is becoming more important than traditional claims.
For example, NCCIH’s current evidence summaries report that evidence for ginkgovaries by condition and is not conclusive for many of its marketed uses. Asian ginseng has some promising findings for particular cognitive outcomes, but evidence for other claims remains mixed.
  5. Standardization and product quality matter.
Two products carrying the same herbal name may differ in extraction method, concentration, plant part, purity and other characteristics. Therefore, results from one study cannot automatically be applied to every product on the market.
